Happy New Year!

Just one new guru to welcome this month - Kalev Karpuk who writes an interesting medium blog about gamification.

Highlighted players for this month are Yu-kai Chou who has month on month upped his Tweeting game which has resulted in double the output over the year.

Monica Cornetti has a huge spike in her Slideshare views this month - getting attention is half the battle.

Check out the leaderboard and follow everyone you don't know yet.

Till next month, keep gamifying!

December 2016 - Check out the new video countdown!

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 Dec 2016

NEW! Watch the Gurus count down and score highlights on Youtube:

New gurus

First up this month we've got a couple of new gurus to welcome. Rob Alvarez Bucholska (32nd) who is focusing on gamification for learning at the IE business school in Madrid and Sabrina Bruehwiler a freelancer who has turned her UserAdventure.com home page into a game.

Welcome guys! They enter the gurus power 100 at ranks 32nd and 28th respectively

Content highlights

Now for some highlighted content from the previous month.

I liked Sylvester Arnabs visual of merging physical and digital in his Play Learn in Everyday Spaces slideshare. When we realise that the Simpsons also included a president trump there's something about life imitating art here!

When Monica Cornetti gave a gamification talk at the national speakers convention it was nice to see her reimagined as a pirate. Aaarr

The Assocation for Project Management's introduction to gamification got lots talking this month. Szymon Machajewski's tweet to the paper saying "learning under compulsion will not stick" was retweeted over 100 times!

Top Players this month

Ercan Altug Yilmaz holds onto the number 5 spot. As does Pete Jenkins of gamification+.

Octalysis guru Yu-kai Chou blast back in at number 3, while Sylvester Arnab creeps up one to number 2.

But a massive jump of 15 spots brings Monica Cornetti back in at number one.

Well done to the top players, and well done to everyone else.

Check out your scores, stories and stats on https://www.rise.global/gurus

Till next month, keep gamifying!

Definitely evidence of a GWC bounce for some players this month!

Well done to this week's top three Andrzej Marczewski who also swooped the Gamification contributor of the year vote at GWC, and to Gustavo Tondello, and Sylvester Arnab

This month we saw the biggest climbs from Patrick Bartl (up 79 places to 9th), Michiel Van Eunen (up 76 places to 29th), and Ruth S. Contreras (up 67 places to 31st).

We also welcome new gurus Vasilis Gkogkidis (17th) and Bo Armstrong (50th). to the Gamification Gurus Power 100 board.

On a technical note, we've now ironed out the blog post counting issues - if you haven't already, you need to verify your blog with Rise (log in to Rise and edit your profile) - then it will now count your posts and add them into your Guru Score.

Happy Novembering.

October 2016 - Gurus on the Rise

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 Oct 2016

This month we saw the biggest climbs from Cesc Garriga Pons (up 81 places to 37th), Juan J. F. Valera Mariscal (up 70 places to 48th), and Samantha Clarke (up 60 places to 33rd).

Well done to this week's top three Dade Ronan, Andrzej Marczewski, and Gustavo Tondello.

I've dropped blog posts from the analysis for the time being as there are a few outstanding blog post collection problems for a few individuals. The complexity of sourcing data from many different types of blog platforms! Until these are resolved I am not publishing blog analytics.

If there are other platforms you would like gamification specific personal analytics on, then please let me know.

Have a great October.

Toby

Well done to this week's top three Dade RonanFabio Viola, and Gustavo Tondello

This month we saw the biggest climbs from Robert (up 51 places to 62nd), Javier Espinosa (up 49 places to 70th), and Rich Wallace (up 47 places to 67th).

A couple of scoring algorithm changes this month following the discussion on the Facebook Gamification group. To balance the proportion of points available more evenly across Slideshare, Blogging and Twitter, these are the changes:

  1. Slideshare Downloads no longer count towards your score.
  2. @Mentions are worth twice as much.

I'm planning a new board which features Dedicated Gamification Organisations - if you'd like your organisation to be on the launch list then please email me with your Twitter handle.

Have a great September!

August 2016 - Gurus scoring algorithm

Published: 12:00 PM - 1 Aug 2016

There has been a good conversation about the gurus scoring algorithm in the Gamification Facebook group. Please add your thoughts and I will make any popular changes for next months release.

In the meantime, Have a great August

July 2016 - Accelerating out of the trough

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 Jul 2016

Some real shoots of excitement this month:

As usual the gurus board takes a look at the personalities within the gamification industry and ranks them according to their online influence.

Have a great month

June 2016 - Evolution not revolution

Published: 2:11 PM - 6 Jun 2016

Gabe's book "Gamification Revolution" is helpful reading for anyone involved in Gamification but I wonder if "Evolution" is a more important word for us to use?

As any designer knows, it's iteration that brings success and we are rarely right first time. This is nowhere more true than in behavioural design programs.

For my part I'd like to continue evolving the gamification gurus program - perhaps by injecting some different divisions - breaking down gurus by domain focus e-learning / loyalty or by location Europe, North America, Asia?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Have a great June

Toby

May 2016 - A new wave of gurus

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 May 2016

It's fascinating to see a new wave of Gamification Gurus start to dominate the top of the Gurus Power 100.

All our data collectors, including blogs, have been working well this month so the stats are as accurate as they've been for a while.

Well done to Andoni and Ercan who take the top two spots, closely followed by veteran guru Andrzej.

Rise now offers advertising slots both on the board itself and on the email - if you're interested in promoting your event or services to the gamification gurus then please do let me know.

Have a great May.

April 2016 - April update

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 Apr 2016

Hi gurus

Here's the latest release of the Gurus power 100...

This month we saw the biggest climbs from Rodrigo Borgia (up 101 places to 19th), Szymon Machajewski (up 88 places to 32nd), and Rob Hulsen (up 78 places to 56th).

Well done to this month's top three Monica CornettiKarl Kapp, and Andoni Sanz.

The blog data collector is still not working 100% - I know some of you have verified their blogs and my team is working to make sure we can process data from your blogs, please bear with them.

For anyone who has not yet verified your personal blog on Rise please do so. (login to Rise and edit your profile). As soon as our data collector is up and running again, we will use your blog activity data in our scoring algorithm. I do believe that writing good quality long form articles on gamification is vital to achieving a serious personal brand in gamification.

For those interested in gamification within learning and development, here's my own latest post: How a Gamified Learning Process can cut across Traditional Boundaries to create an integrated learning environment. Would of course love to hear your comments and thoughts.

Have a top April

Toby

MAXIMISING YOUR SCORE

While the Twitter data is now coming in much more reliably, we're now looking at Blog data to improve the accuracy here.

After a Rise change to support blog verification, you can't get any scores for your blog if it isn't verified by Rise. Edit your profile to get it verified.

You also need to make sure you've added your Slideshare account to your profile to benefit from Slideshare points too.

We've a new number one in the form of the effervescent (and that's just his shirts) Gamfed chair - Pete Jenkins. :) Well done Pete - you really are spreading the word about gamification.

This month we also saw the big climbs from Darryn Van den Berg (up 81 places to 43rd), Lauren S. Ferro (up 64 places to 41st), and Alireza Alireza.r.shourabi (up 45 places to 18th).

I've published the results on the Gamification Of Work blog

January 2016

Published: 12:00 AM - 1 Jan 2016

Top Guru: Karl Kapp

Yu-kai Chou won, based entirely on your weighted votes, the Gamification Guru of the Year 2015. Narrowly pipping Monica and Andrzej to the post.

However it wasn't enough to put him at the top of this month's gurus power 100!

This month we saw the biggest climbs from Bernardo Crespo (up 108 places to 22nd), Joshua Wong (up 102 places to 28th), and Isidro Rodrigo (up 96 places to 10th).

We also welcome new gurus Sylvester Arnab (8th), Ahmed Hossam (31st), and Marcel Klimo (62nd). to the Gamification Gurus Power 100 board.

Guru Freebies / Discount codes for 2016

I'm compiling a list of freebies for the Gamification Gurus for 2016. If you'd like to offer the gurus a discount code or freebie for your product or service then drop me a line.

Data Issues with the December Release

Please note there was a source data issue with the December release. I've been trying to find a more reliable way to bring in #gamification tweets and I can see I haven't collected the data correctly this month. I'm going to have to address it again for next month.

June 2015

Published: 2:40 PM - 1 Jun 2015

It was a busy May for many of the gurus but no changes in the top 5 - what could this mean? My own guru score plummeted as I went quiet on twitter for a month - time to get back in the saddle. Have a great June!
